Naturopathy And You
Naturopathy is a distinct system of healing — a philosophy, science, art and practice that seeks to harness the bodyâs own natural healing powers to promote health. Its concern is with the whole being. This art has been practiced in its current incarnation for over 100 years although its principles date back almost two and a half millennia to Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine. He was renowned fox his treatment of disease in accordance with 'natural laws.' He believed:
"Only nature heals, providing it is given the opportunity to do so. Let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food. Disease is an expression of purification; all disease is one."
Naturopathic medicine's basic premise is Strong and true: Keep the body as healthy as possible and remove obstacles to its healing. That is the gentlest and, therefore, the most prudent and long-lived form of healing. As such, it is also the most effective. A naturopath does this using nutritional therapy, natural diet, herbal medicine, classical and complex homeopathy, exercise therapy, hydrotherapy, acupressure, reflexology, and stress reduction to regain the body's harmony and balance.
Think about it. The body is a self-repairing organism. When your skin is cut, it heals. This is true both inside and outside your body. It isn't programmed for disease; it's programmed for good health. If this is true, why is man plagued with so many illnesses?
Dr. M. Ted Morter, Jr., M.D., narrows it down to three things "Toxicity, Timing and Thoughts." Disease comes from the body's response to the stresses put upon it, "the foods you e-at, the kind of stresses you subject it to, and your attitudes." Each of the small decisions one makes each day will bring one closer to or farther away from true good health, which is much mote than just the absence of disease.
Symptoms, from a naturopath's view, are simply one's particular genetic handling of a dis-ease. Many different symptoms can present from the same cause depending on your inherited tendencies and weaknesses. If the symptoms are treated and the cause is not cured, the dis-ease will simply move to another location in the body. This causes a reoccurrence of symptoms from the same dis-ease although perhaps manifesting in a different form and place.
Naturopathy prevents reoccurrence by not only relieving the symptoms, but also eliminating the deeper seat of dis-ease, the inherent causative factors, by looking not only at the symptoms, but also assessing the whole person for the cause of this dis-ease. The end result is a stronger, healthier body that can be used more effectively for a longer period of time. It's not how long you live; it's how you live long.
It is always wisest to deal with the body by beginning with the gentlest measures possible, clearing the pathways and allowing the body the opportunity to heal. It is with such wisdom in mind that one could incorporate a naturopathic point of view both to regain and maintain true health.
However, sometimes when we feel sick, we need to alleviate the symptoms before we formulate a program that will help the body truly heal itself. I have chosen to specialize in complex homeopathy to do this. I personally feel it is the gentlest yet strongest and most effective treatment currently available. It is the medicine of the future.
